Chapter 604

We have "adopted" the two geropsychiatric wards at the VA hospital in Topeka. Some of the patients in these wards are temporary residents, however for many patients-this is home.

1. We have a birthday party once a month for both wards.

2. We have a Christmas party for both wards.

a. Set up several trees

b. Provide several gifts (chosen by the patients) plus a bag of 6 snacks (crackers, candy, honey buns, chips, nuts, etc.) for each patient.

c. Provide refreshments for Christmas party.

d. Have Santa pass out all the gifts to each patient.

Our evolvement with these wards began at Christmas 2008, so we are constantly finding other events planned for the patients that we can help with.

We were able to find several business partners to help with monetary donations last Christmas and are looking for similar help this year. We would like to give 3 gifts to each patient this year and increase the amount of snack items we can give them. Our goal is to raise $900-$1000.00 for Christmas 2009. We would welcome any help.

Louise Jones of Topeka is in need of help cleaning up her yard. If you can be of assistance please contact her at 785-233-8738.

I am a 39 year old woman who had the misfortune of bad medical attention that ended up costing me THOUSANDS of dollars in unnecessary testing. I work 32-35 hours a week as a veterinary technician in Ottawa Kansas and I have a 16 year old daughter. I have no health insurance. I have applied and been turned down for medical assistance through the state. Last year I made 20 thousand dollars, but somehow it is too much to qualify for assistance. I rent the house that I live in and my monthly living expenses are about all I can afford. I would appreciate any help from any source out there, I am in desperate need. Thank you very much!
